How To Help
by Naomi Ernest

For those struggling with mental illness and those supporting them. Originally sent as a two-part letter to my email subscribers 08/21.

Preface: This letter contains honest discussion of mental health issues. Not only is it tricky to talk about something as personal and unwieldy as mental illness, but also it takes so many forms that it’s tough to speak in generalities. I’ve tried to give some overall thoughts, but please remember I’m only speaking from my own personal perspective both as someone who experiences mental illness and as support to loved ones with mental illness.

Every situation is different. Use this only as a starting point.

Please note, there is a difference between someone struggling through symptoms of their mental illness and someone in crisis. If someone is in crisis, and/or you fear for their safety, seek professional help. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 800-273-8255
